HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, UN Messenger of Peace, IOC Member, President of the Federation Equestre Internationale
In the context of nations with a history of peaceful co-existence, sport is an important part of the social context. Through sport we create social relationships, build connections, improve communications and enhance the quality of education.
But in any post-conflict situation, sport becomes not just a part of the social equation but a driving force for the rebuilding of communities and societies. It brings individuals and regions together, highlighting commonalities and bridging cultural and ethnic divides.
Sport provides a forum to learn skills such as discipline, confidence and leadership. It teaches core principles such as tolerance, cooperation and respect and most importantly, in my view, it instills the value of effort and how to manage victory and defeat.
The second day of this inspired conference will coincide with the 60th anniversary of the UN's Human Rights Day. Although coincidental, it is symbolic, because 40 years ago in 1978, the UN through UNESCO adopted a chapter of Physical Education and Sport noting at the time that 'The practice of physical education and sport is a fundamental human right for all'.
I congratulate the Sports Council of Wales and the Ministry of Sports and Youth of the Kurdistan Regional Government for coming together to host this conference and for furthering the right to sport in the drive towards development and peace.
