International sports conference
The The Sports Council for Wales and the
Kurdistan Regional Government co-hosted an unprecedented international sports conference on 9 - 10 December 2008 at the Welsh Institute of Sport in Cardiff.
The conference titled - "Regional sport, international participation: The role of regions in building a legacy of sporting excellence and participation" - looked at how devolved regions pursue sporting excellence and encourage grassroots activity.
A senior delegation from the Kurdistan Region joined a line up of major international and UK sporting bodies and NGOs in what has been a culmination of a growing friendship between the two regions in the area of sport.
Following the conference, Taha Barwary – the Kurdish Regional Government Minister for Sport and Youth – invited a Welsh delegation to visit the Region in 2009 to repay their hospitality and to show them first hand the progress made on the back of their support and advice.
In addition, the Minister declared his intention to use ideas and lessons from the conference in the implementation of the Region's Sport Roadmap, and declared his ambition to set up a 'School of Sports' in Kurdistan in the near future.
