How do regions compete internationally?
Mihir Bose, BBC Sports Editor
Huw Jones, Chief Executive, Sports Council Wales
Hakan Kuorak, Vice President, Sami World Cup
Chaired by Bayan Rahman, UK High Representative to the Kurdistan Commission
Participating in sport at any level allows those involved to establish their own identity in a way that may not be possible politically. In particular, competing in international sport can raise the profile of a nation or region and promote a more positive perception of a post-conflict area in the international arena.
The panel will address:
- How can regions compete internationally - what are the opportunities, what barriers do they face?
- What are the political implications of regional teams competing alongside national teams?
- What benefits are there to gaining international recognition in the sporting arena?
- Are there any countries that a newly autonomous region can look to for inspiration in the international arena?
- What is the role of National Olympic Committees? How do regional bodies work with them?
